Overview

Statement of Need

Community oncologists have a need for timely information on research advances and emerging technologies, as well as greater access to new therapies. In addition, there is a need for updated information on how to utilize innovative therapies and effectively manage their side effects in a rural practice environment.

Program Goal

Advances in Science and Practice in Rural Oncology will provide depth and perspective to the most important scientific findings, facilitating the application of research results to patient care. This on-line interactive newsletter provides the means to address the particular challenges and barriers common to oncology practice in rural environments. This activity is designed to increase the likelihood that rural cancer patients receive the most current evidence-based treatment and achieve longer survival.

Learning objectives

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Provide care to oncology patients in accordance with current guidelines and protocols for different cancer types
  2. Incorporate newer treatments into cancer management based on the latest scientific evidence
  3. Manage side effects of chemotherapy
  4. Evaluate the specific challenges of oncologists who practice in rural environments to maximize access to medical, surgical, and technical resources to improve patient care and outcomes

After completing issue 3, you should be able to:

  1. Optimally treat patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) based on current standards of care
  2. Recognize the role of new, targeted biologic agents in RCC treatment
